In 2009, DOE launched a new solid-state lighting (SSL) manufacturing R&D initiative, designed to enhance the quality and lower the cost of SSL products through improvements in manufacturing equipment and processes. More than 350 industry stakeholders joined DOE at two workshops to build a roadmap for SSL manufacturing in the U.S.
In 2010, a follow-up workshop was held to share updates and re-examine roadmap priorities. Last year's attendees referred to this gathering as a "meeting of the minds," representing the entire breadth of the SSL supply chain. From chip makers, luminaire manufacturers, material and equipment suppliers, and component manufacturers, to those who assemble and package, those who test, and those who make the test equipment, the participants recognized that industry-wide collaboration and a common framework of priorities are essential to moving SSL forward.
