Billerica, MA―March 19, 2009―Luminus Devices, Inc., today announced the introduction of two new PhlatLight® LEDs: the CBM-380-RGBW and CBM-290-RGB modules. These 4-color and 3-color LED modules are designed to enable next-generation solid-state lighting fixtures for entertainment and architectural lighting applications that require ultra-high lumens and dynamic color-changing. Based on the PlatLight LED large-chip architecture, these are the industry’s first and only multi-color LEDs with individually controllable color channels that can deliver light levels exceeding 2,500 total lumens from a compact 6x8mm optical footprint.
“The PhlatLight LED large-chip architecture shatters the current brightness limitations of solid-state lighting for the entertainment and architectural markets,” said Dave Sciabica, Lighting Business Group General Manager at Luminus Devices. “For the first time, fixture manufacturers can provide lighting designers intense high-quality, well-mixed digital light without the annoying color shadows that result from using hundreds of lumen-starved LEDs in over-sized fixtures.”
The CBM-380-RGBW PhlatLight LED module produces up to 2,500 lumens from a light-emitting surface that is 38 square millimeters (mm2). With individual monolithic red, green, blue, and white die, the CBM-380-RGBW is ideal for applications where a broad color gamut and superior color rendering is important. The 6x8mm optical source window allows the use of simple optics to eliminate the color shadowing and color mixing challenges lighting designers typically face. The mechanical form factor is designed to support an array of tiled, replaceable modules, enabling fixture designers to easily scale the light output of their systems well beyond 10,000 to 15,000 lumens.
The CBM-290-RGB PhlatLight LED has a total emitting surface of 29 mm2, producing up to 1,500 lumens of total output from an optical source that is also 6x8 mm. With individual large red, green, and blue die, the CBM-290-RGB is suitable for applications that require dynamic color changing and homogeneous color mixing, but with slightly reduced lumen output and CRI. The CBM-290-RGB eliminates the color shadowing typically seen with multi-color, multi-LED arrays. The CBM-290-RGB has the same form factor as the CBM-380-RGBW allowing for an array of tiled, replaceable modules and scalable system output.
Both the CBM-380 and CBM-290 come in a connectorized, thermally-efficient package with standard mounting features that simplifies system design by eliminating the added cost of PCB design and assembly of LED arrays. Both are simple to service and upgrade even after the fixture has been installed. The high single-source output of these new PhlatLight LED modules increases system reliability when compared to the alternative of using hundreds of smaller LEDs and results in faster design and manufacturing cycles. The additive color mixing characteristics of multi-color LED lighting systems also contributes to higher overall system efficiencies which translate into immediate energy savings. PhlatLight LEDs are mercury-free, highly reliable and have a lifetime of 60,000 hours with lumen maintenance of greater than 70 percent.
The CBM-380-RGBW and CBM-290-RGB are available for sampling now with volume shipments starting in the second quarter of this year.
