SAN JOSE, CA — Replacing recessed lights that use compact fluorescent and less efficient conventional
lamps with LEDs which use less power and are more environmentally friendly became a little easier this
month with new LUXEON Rebel based downlighters from Integrated System Technologies (IST) in the
United Kingdom. Two models, the DL-080 and DL-090 were designed with the specification and contracting
communities in mind so that the light output and installation process would be familiar and comparable to
existing conventional solutions. Payback periods are
expected to be 24 – 33 months with 12 hours of daily use.
Philips Lumileds has published a new case study describing
the development of these products and it’s available on
the web at www.philipslumileds.com/pdfs/CS20.pdf.
The design and engineering parameters for the new
recessed lighting were demanding. To meet the
requirements, the LED had to provide:
• A very small footprint so that all the units would
fit in a 34mm diameter disc.
• Superior reliability and lumen maintenance so that an extended warranty could be offered.
• Excellent efficiency so that the luminaires would be Part L compliant in the United Kingdom.
